Vintage Notes

The 2022 vintage began early, spurred on by mild and warm winter weather and modest rainfall, leading to budbreak nearly a month ahead of typical. This is concerning as it increases the risk of frost damage as shoots are exposed to unsettled March and April weather, but an early start is often excellent for wine quality. Nature was very kind to us in the spiring, and while frost damage was not uncommon in the foothills or the central coast, we entered more settled Spring weather essentially unscathed. Winter rains supplemented with early irrigation provided balanced, even growth and a reasonable set entering the Summer. Here the weather became a bit of a rollercoaster between hot and moderate weather, with a serious heat strike in September. These individual waves require a bit more more irrigation to protect vine health, and can actually slow grape development. We pulled out fruit out as the heat wave began, avoiding the intense heat. The fruit was luscious, retaining natural acidity and fresh complex fruit flavors.

Tasting Notes

Light straw in color, the 2022 Durell reveals aromas of wild honey, fresh cut apples, hints of toasted cocoanut and unfolds into mandarine, poached pear, crème patisserie, and toasted almond. Its smooth, silky, and round in texture. The palate is rich and complex, balancing fresh acidity with creamy weight. Drink now and over the next few years, and as always, not too cold.
